You can play!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whirled.com\/\">http:\/\/www.whirled.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve been in closed invite-only alpha for just over a year, since we <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wonderlandblog.com\/wonderland\/2007\/03\/whirled_1.html\">announced Whirled at GDC 2007<\/a>, with a pretty small community of very dedicated and creative players. It&#8217;s exciting to see her with 200 simultaneous players. Send me a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whirled.com\/#people-8\">friend request<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>You need Flash 9.0.115 and FF 2\/3, IE 7\/8 or Safari. Whirled is very Javascript (<a href=\"http:\/\/code.google.com\/webtoolkit\/\">GWT<\/a>) and Flash intensive, as <a href=\"http:\/\/ondrejka.blogspot.com\/2008\/03\/hot-macbook-air.html\">Cory discovered<\/a>. It helps to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.com\/en-US\/firefox\/all-beta.html\">Firefox 3 beta 4<\/a>, which has faster javascript and has fixed problems we were having with Flash &#8216;starving out&#8217; GWT.<\/p>\n<p>We made most of the games, but only a small part of the other stuff (~600 avatars, ~2,500 pieces of furniture, ~60 pets, etc.) available in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whirled.com\/#shop\">Shop<\/a>. More about making stuff and a whole bunch of code can be found in the <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.whirled.com\/\">Whirled wiki<\/a>. The market is fairly robust, for example <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whirled.com\/#shop-l_9_70\">Starry Night<\/a> by Pareia and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whirled.com\/#shop-l_5_261\">Sassy Skelly<\/a> by Moppy, each with 200+ sales so far. We have only implemented Coins,  the &#8216;soft&#8217; or &#8216;attention&#8217; currency, and they are pretty easy to come by playing games.<\/p>\n<p>From the selection of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whirled.com\/#games\">Games<\/a>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whirled.com\/#games-d_7\">LolCaptions<\/a> (LOLcats \/ silent movie captions to flickr photos), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whirled.com\/#games-d_10\">Brawler Whirled<\/a>; (&#8216;A side scrolling crawl-n-brawl game involving swords, gnolls, and cuteness&#8217;) by Ian of <a href=\"http:\/\/machall.com\/\">Mac Hall<\/a> \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.threepanelsoul.com\/\">Three Panel Soul<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whirled.com\/#games-d_153\">Boomie Time<\/a> (by player The Cosmic Cheese, no graphics, yet),\u00c2\u00a0 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whirled.com\/#whirleds-d_5\">Bella Bingo<\/a> (an experimental in-Whirled game).<\/p>\n<p>We had a plan to go beta in September 2007 with a Facebook app. We had it all working, but with the notable support of our <a href=\"http:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2008\/03\/03\/this-pirate-just-scored-35-million-in-vc-funds\/\">new (as of June 2007) investor<\/a> Jon Callaghan of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trueventures.com\/\">True Ventures<\/a>, we decided to delay and go back to work on UI and polish our selection of multi-player games. I&#8217;m glad we did. For the curious, we are not worrying about apps right now, yet verily, you can embed Whirled easily enough in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/capncleaver\">ur myspace<\/a>.
